Uterine Artery Embolization ( Uterine Fibroid Embolization )

Uterine Artery Embolization ( Uterine Fibroid Embolization ) is a new technique used to treat Fibroid Tumors of the Uterus.
Fibroids are highly vascular tumors that grow from the uterus wall, they are highly supplied by blood from the blood vessels, arteries, that supply the uterus.
The idea of Uterine Artery Embolization ( Uterine Fibroid Embolization ) is occlusion of the blood vessels , arteries , that supply the fibroids , leading to death & shrinkage of the fibroid tumors.
Occlusion of the feeding artery to the fibroids is done by a catheter, a catheter is a tiny tube that is passed in the patient’s artery & can be seen and guided in the arterial tree under X-Ray ( the catheter machine ).
The catheter is navigated to reach the Uterine artery. At this level, special spherical particles ( beads ) are injected in the catheter to occlude the arteries that supply the Fibroids.
Uterine Artery Embolization ( Uterine Fibroid Embolization ) is a safe procedure when done with an experienced interventional radiologist. There’s no risk of bleeding, very minimal risk of infection, it’s done under local anesthesia and the rate of recurrence of symptoms & re-appearance of fibroids is low, compared to other treatment forms as surgery.
